This study purports to examine Korean learners' attitudes, motivation, and confidence. The results show a clear tendency for the students to be a little positive in attitudes, moderately motivated, and somewhat confident, even though they have general anxiety about making mistakes and their attitudes toward native speakers of English are neither positive nor negative. The results also indicate that there are some significant differences among groups. ESL students are significantly more positive in attitudes toward learning English, more integratively and instrumentally oriented, more confident, and less competitive than their EFL counterpart. Likewise, the students who have more experience in English-spoken countries and/or evaluate themselves as more competent in communication are likely to be more positive in attitudes, more strongly motivated, and more confident. Most important finding is that those who have studied in Canada for relatively a short time are the least motivated group. The study suggests that the results are useful for further research on motivation and willingness to communicate.
