English abstracts are considered to be an integral part of research articles in that they can serve as a guide for the contents of the whole paper. Thus, writing an English abstract properly might be an important task not only to native speaking scholars but also to nonnative speaking scholars. However, there have been few studies investigating the differences or similarities between English abstracts of international and Korean research journals in various academic fields. In this connection, this study aims to compare the frequently used words, keywords, clusters, and key clusters used in English abstracts of international and Korean science-education-related research papers. To this end, two English abstracts corpora were compiled from international and Korean science education research journals. From these corpora, frequent words, keywords, 4-word clusters, and key clusters were extracted using WordSmith Tools 6.0., a corpus analysis program and were analyzed in terms of how different or similar international and Korean journal articles are in the use of frequent words and expressions. The results of this analysis showed that both of the two corpora have content words like science, student, teacher, study, and teach as well as function words in the 20 most frequent words. It was also found that English abstracts of Korean journals overuse the definite article the and be-verb and underuse words like we, may, that, how our, and a, rather than those of international journals. Finally, the analysis of 4-word clusters revealed that there are some differences between the two corpora in the types and the frequency of the clusters: Korean journal abstracts corpus has much more types of 4-word clusters, and their frequency is also higher than that of international journal abstracts corpus.
