Due to the liturgical movement of the Second Vatican Council, there has been an increasing awareness of recovering the historical eucharist prayer, namely the Great Thanksgiving Prayer in the Eucharist. Beside the Roman Catholic Church, even many of the mainline Protestant churches have been involving in the movement with their revised worship books including some ecumenical eucharist prayers. While the importance of the theological and historical eucharist prayer has been emerging and expanding even to the many Protestant churches, however most Korean Protestant churches still don’t know even what it is about. Though someone might have heard on that, they don’t know what the theological meanings, liturgical effectiveness and pastoral usefulness are.
One of the main reasons is that the reformer, Martin Luther had removed almost all elements of the eucharist prayer, and replaced it with his own alternations. That’s the reason that most Protestant churches are not familiar even to the name. There have been criticism of Luther’s discontinuous reformation in spite of many compliments. Thus, this article examines what Luther has done for the eucharist prayer and why he removed or changed some particular elements with his own creative contents. While we are examining, we would see the historical and theological significances of his works as well as some limitations. Further, this article would suggest what we as Korean Protestant should do for the authentic eucharist prayers, reflecting the historical and theological ones.
