Report Errors
Within the context of rising Africa in international society, the quantitative growth of African studies in Korea has been unfolded since particularly 2000. Despite such a growth of African studies, the degree of its contribution to the academic circle and civil society still remain meager. This situation is mainly ascribed not only to a small number of Africanists committed to African studies but also to the deficient reality of fragile academic foundations related to research and education on African studies in Korea. Moreover, the tendency of civil society to overgeneralize the state of African societies worsens the misperceptions and preconceptions about the African continent.
In this sense, this paper tries to depict to what degree and scope the African studies in Korea have evolved and attempts to examine how the Korean Africanists’ research fields and issue-areas have been dealt with. Ultimately, as a result of this process of examination, the paper is to propose some of important ways forward for the development of African studies in Korea following the exploration of problems and challenges African studies in Korea face.
