The purpose of this study was to investigate the applicability of visuo-auditory modeling as a cognitive training for enhancing skill learning by analyzing the effect of visuo-auditory modeling in learning cascade juggling. Fifty male college students with no prior task experience participated in the study. The participants were randomly assigned into one of five groups: visual modeling + physical practice (PP), auditory modeling + PP, visuo-auditory modeling + PP, physical practice, and a control group. All of the participants were asked to conduct the different training programs by group starting on the next day of the pre-test. They performed their training program 20 minutes per day, three times per week, for five weeks. The post-test was conducted the day after the end of the training program. A retention test was implemented one week after the post-test. All measurement procedures and variables were the same across the pre-test, post-test, and retention test. The score of a successful juggling cycle, spatial variables such as movement pattern of upper limbs and ball trajectory, and temporal variables such as hand cycle time and dwell ratio were analyzed as dependent variables . The combined training of visuo-auditory modeling with physical practice was the most effective for improving juggling performance and its spatio-temporal variables. In addition, the combination training of visual modeling and PP was effective for enhancing spatial aspects such as the movement pattern of upper limbs and ball trajectory, whereas the combination training of auditory modeling and PP was effective for facilitating temporal aspect like dwell ratio. We suggest that visuo-auditory modeling can act as an effective cognitive training for facilitating the learning of a skill that requires accurate movements and spatio-temporal timing.
