The realization of the church’s identity can be found in its mission of evangelizing the world, which means to achieve the kingdom of God in the world. If so, we have to reflect on what it means to achieve the kingdom of God in the world and to do so, most of all, we need to face the reality of the world where human live. Only with that reflection done, it becomes possible to question if the poverty that exists in all parts of the world today and characterizes the existence of the majority of the people(at least 2/3 of mankind) and the justice which is closely related to it are mere social-political problems or, more deeply, theological and anthropological problems. According to the answer to that question, we could find the way how the church and Christians should act. In fact, poverty has long been the important issue that needs critical inquiry within the church and theology through all the generations with biblical admonitions and instructions(Mt 19:21 cf.) and christological reflections(Phil 2:6-7; 2Cor 8:9 cf.).
This treatise fundamental theologically clarifies that poverty and justice, which can be said to have emerged as one of the most important issues in the contemporary society, are not an issue that is limited to the sphere of the common good of the right society but an issue that is fundamentally related to the liberation(salvation) of human being that Christianity aims, namely humanization and evangelization.
Poverty and justice are related to the duty, mission and essence of the church and the basis of which can be found in the poverty and justice of Jesus Christ, the founder of the church. After all, since the evangelization which should be based on poverty and justice is after the life and existence of Jesus, himself a poor man from Nazareth, in whom we believe, the performance of it should be based on no other than the doing of Jesus. Therefore, the performance of poverty and justice is not a task of an individual or a group that is interested in it, but is the calling, the essence and the duty of the church. That is, it concerns the existence of Christians, in which all Christians should take part. Thus, in the true sense of evangelization, the poverty and the justice of Jesus and Christians are the essential elements of evangelization.

교회의 정체성의 실현은 세상의 복음화에 있다. 세상 안에서 하느님 나라를 이루어가는 것이다. 그렇다면 세상에서 하느님 나라를 이루어간다는 것이 어떤 의미인지에 대한 깊은 성찰이 필요할 것이고, 그러기 위해서는 인간이 살아가는 세상의 현실을 직시하는 것이 무엇보다 필요할 것이다. 그러면 현재 세계 도처에 실재하며 간과할 수 없는 다수(인류의 3분의 2)의 생존을 특징짓는 가난과, 그것과 밀접한 관련이 있는 정의가 단순히 사회적, 정치적 문제인지, 아니면 그 이상의 신학적, 인간학적 문제이며 나아가 교회 존재의 의미와도 직결되는지 숙고하고 인식할 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 그에 따라 교회와 그리스도인이 어떻게 행동해야 하는지 그 방향을 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 실제로 교회와 신학에서 가난은 성서적 권고와 가르침(마태 19,21 참조), 그리고 그리스도론적 숙고(참조: 필리 2,6-7; 2코린 8,9)를 근거로 모든 시대를 관통하여 중요한 주제이며 비판적 물음으로 요구되고 있다.
본고는 현시대에 어쩌면 가장 중요한 문제로 떠오른 가난과 정의가 올바른 사회의 공동선에 관한 문제에 국한되는 것이 아니라, 그리스도교가 지향하는 인간의 해방(구원) 곧 인간화와 함께 복음화의 근간이 되는 문제이자 요구임을 기초신학적으로 밝혀보고자 한다.
가난과 정의는 무엇보다도 교회의 임무와 파견 그리고 본질과 관계하는 것이며, 그것의 근거는 바로 교회 창립자인 예수 그리스도의 가난과 정의에 있다. 결국 가난과 정의를 바탕으로 한 복음화는 우리가 신앙하는 나자렛의 가난한 이, 예수의 삶과 존재 자체에 근거를 둔 것이기에 그것의 실행 역시 예수가 실제로 행한 것을 따르는 것 외에 다른 길은 없을 것이다. 그런 점에서 가난과 정의의 실행은 그것에 관심 있는 여느 개인이나 단체의 일이 아니라, 교회 본연의 소명이자 본질이고 의무이다. 곧 그리스도인 모두가 참여해야 하는, 그리스도인 실존에 해당한다. 따라서 복음화의 진정한 의미에서 예수와 그리스도인의 가난과 정의는 복음화의 필수요소이다.
