The aim of the current study is to investigate relationships between polygraph examiner's individual traits and confession rates. Prior studies of polygraph examination have been limited to investigate admissibility of polygraph evidence, reliability and validity of testing methods, and new technological developments. Particularly, in Korea, there has been no empirical study carried out to investigate possible effects of polygraph examiner's characteristics on performance of polygraph examination. To fill the vacuum of the literature, the current study examined effects of three socio-demographic variables(examiner's educational levels, experiences, and sex) on their performance(i.e., confession rates). Data utilized were collected from 107 seminar participants at the annual meeting of the American Polygraph Association in 2007. The findings showed that there were positive relationships between total years of experience in polygraph and confession rates, and between continuous specialized training and confession rates. Unexpectedly, the current study found that there were no significant relationships between educational levels and confession rates, and between total numbers of polygraph examination and confession rates. Finally, the current study did not find significant difference in confession rates across different gender groups. Based on the findings, four policy implications are discussed and suggested.
