The study is discussed in “Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall-street” by Herman Melville with the disciplinary society and the achievement society derived from the theory of Byung-Chul Han. Bartleby’s repetitive answer, “I would prefer not to,” can be interpreted as “negativity” of philosophers’ notions such as Gilles Deleuze, Slavoj Zizek and Giorgio Agamben. According to Han’s understanding for post-modern society, the “Story of Wall-Street” can be read as a story of exhaustion or neurosis. The phenomenon of disciplinary or control society is a panopticon, and its characteristics can be prohibition, compulsion, regulation, obligation, deficiency and refusal for otherness. The phenomenon of achievement or burnout society is an extinction of negativity and excess of positivity, and its characteristics can be exhibition, evidence, pornography, acceleration, information and unveiling for oneself. While Bartleby’s constant rejection can be a negativity for surveillance, edification and subject of control in disciplinary society, it can be a portent for excessive positivity, motivation, self-innovation and self-devouring.
