이 논문의 목표는 인간 복제에 대한 도덕적 정당화 문제와 별도로, 인간복제가 실현되는 상황에서 제기되는 철학적 문제들 중에서 복제인간의 인격적 지위에 대하여 논의하는 것이다. 구체적으로 복제인간의 인격성, 도덕적 지위, 책임주체를 확인하는 문제 등을 다루고자 한다. 먼저 인격의 개념과 동일성(신분확인)의 기준에 대하여 살펴보고 그것이 복제인간의 경우에 어떻게 적용이 되는지 고찰한다. 그 결과 복제인간도 하나의 인격이라는 것은 의심의 여지가 없는 반면에, 대량복제에 따른 `몸의 다수화`는 신분확인의 어려움을 일으킨다는 것을 논의한다. 이와 더불어 복제인간은 본체 인간과 마찬가지로 독립적 인격이라는 것, 복제인간/클론들도 각기 고유한 개성과 정체성을 갖는다는 것, 그리고 복제인간을 차별하거나 본체인간의 종속적인 도구로 사용할 수 없는 이유, 나아가 복제를 통하여 영생을 얻으려는 시도는 실패한다는 것 등을 함께 논의하게 될 것이다.
