Body surface area is considered to be an important indicator in the administration of anticancer agents in clinical treatment. However, little is known about how body surface area changes with age. In this study we applied the Fujimoto body surface area formula (S=88.83W0.443H0.663: S [cm2]=body surface area,W [kg]=weight, H [cm]=height to calculate body surface area from the height and body weight of boys 6 to 17 years of age. The wavelet interpolation method was applied to the calculated values for current body surface area to analyze the changes with age. For age changes in body surface area, the boys were classified by height were and the relationship and order between growth in height and the age changes in body surface area for each of the height groups were investigated. The subjects were 253 first-year students in a university in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, for whom longitudinal growth measurement data were obtained for height and weight from their first year of elementary school (6 years old, 1983) to their final year of high school (17 years old, 1994). Body surface area was calculated from the obtained height and weight, and the wavelet interpolation method was applied current values for body area at current age from 6 to 17 years of age. The results showed no difference in age at maximum peak velocity of body surface area between the different height groups. This indicates that the changes with age in body surface area depend more on growth in height than growth in body weight.
