This study examines the relationship of balance index and pelvic limb muscle activity with walking speed to suggest an effective approach method in therapeutic mediation for clinical improvement of walking function. For this, the measurement of each variable for 62 stroke patients involved GAITRite for walking speed, Timed Up & Go Test and Berg Balance Scale Test and Functional Reach Test for balance index, and WEMG-8 for pelvic limb muscle activity of four muscles. In order to find out the relationship between variables, the multiple regression analysis was executed to figure out the multiple correlation and the relationship between the causes and the results. First, in the correlation of walking variable, balance index, and pelvic limb muscle activity, walking speed was found to have a clear correlation with all sub-variables of balance index. Also, in pelvic limb muscle activity, biceps femoris of double-limb support was found to have a clear positive correlation with Berg Balance Scale Test. Second, all sub-variables of balance index is found to have a significant influence on walking speed, and in sub-variables of pelvic limb muscle activity, it was found to have a significant influence on rectus femoris and biceps femoris activity of double-limb support. In conclusion, in therapeutic approach for improvement of walking function in relation to the walking speed which is the basic index to understand prognosis function and everyday life of stroke patients, the major assignment is to first enhance the balance ability. Also, it can be seen that the walking-related balance ability of stroke patients is determined by the degree of the muscle activity of the femoral region.
