There are 433 higher education institutions in the Republic of Korea on the basis of the 2013. Among them 188 are four year research-oriented and comprehensive universities, 10 teachers training universities, 2 industry oriented A&M universities, 43 graduate school based universities, 140 2~3 year junior and community colleges and 50 other higher education institutions.
The paper discusses the development of higher education institutions, current situation based on various statistics, and some issues and problems in higher education in Korea. The development of Korean higher education institution includes Tae-hak in Goguryeo dynasty, Gukhak in Silla dynasty, higher education system in Paekche Kingdom, Gukjagam in Goryeo dynasty, Sungkyunkwan in Joseon dynasty, Baron Theology, Dongmunhak(Korea"s first English language Inst.), Yugeong Gongwon (Public Institute of English Education), Wonsan Haksa, Gwanghyewon & Severance medical (Yonsei University), Ewha Womans university and Seoul National University.
The second section lists various statistical data related to higher education in Korea provided by the Korea Education Development Institute (KEDI) in 2013. It includes the trends of higher education institutes in Korea, student numbers enrolled, percentage of men and women students, number of professors in higher education, student/foreign professor ratio, number of women faculty, the ratio of students per professor, student/foreign professor ratio, and students entering higher education institutions.
The last part of the paper discusses on some issues and problems in higher education in Korea, such as, academic background supremacy public awareness, university entrance preparation education, poor learning environment of higher education institutions, academic based rigid system of education, and government controlled higher education management system,
