Despite the growing critical attention to ‘Black’ British Literature, British Asian female authors have largely been eclipsed by writers with a Caribbean or African background. This essay means to redress this critical imbalance by examining the city life of British Asian women in Ravinder Randhawa’s A Wicked Old Woman, “arguably the first explicitly Asian British novel” (Nasta 182, original emphasis). Kuli and Rani, British Asian women in A Wicked Old Woman, are urban nomads who find home dysfunctional, uncomfortable, and limiting. Randhawa, however, does not subscribe to nomadism as a viable way of existence because city streets are full of racial violence and gender hostility that put British Asian women in a doubly vulnerable position. Instead, A Wicked Old Woman foregrounds British Asian women’s effort to create a new urban community built upon female solidarity. The novel’s interest in an urban community counters the neo-liberal culture of the 1980s shaped by Thatcherism, which privileges individualism and competition over community and solidarity.
