Notice On Chinse Grammar was written by German Missionary Karl Friedrich Gützlaff (郭士立: 1803-1851) who was also known as Philo-Sinensis(愛漢者) in 1842. Most of Chinese Grammar books in 17th and 18th centuries were still under Latin Grammar’s influence, therefore they did not reflect Chinese well.
However, the analysis of Notice On Chinse Grammar in many ways, such as passive constructions, causative constructions, the ba-construction, three type of complement(resultative, potential, extent), 5 tense system(including aspect), was a new approach which was different with previous missionaries’ grammar books and had a pivotal role in 19th Chinese grammatical history. For example Gützlaff divided the ba-construction according to the concrete meaning of ba, namely ‘take’ or ‘hold’. He also explained the largest number of passive constructions and causative constructions in Chinese among western missionaries’ grammar books in modern times.
Although this book has an important position among western missionaries’ grammar books in 19th century, but very few people pay attention to this grammar book today, therefore we have to revaluate this book and realize that this grammar book has undeniable worth.
