Through travel, humanity gained the opportunity to access nature, acquired the ability to communicate freely with others based on exchange of information, and established a foundation that allowed for the understanding and acceptance of other cultures. Travel that appears in the traditional Chinese culture also developed alongside the history of China, and travel advanced even more by the Tang period than it had in the past, as it transformed into a systematic form due to the peculiar openness of the Tang dynasty. Thus, the significance of each travel became even more diverse.
Scholarly travels during the Tang period can largely be divided into government post travels(宦游) and sightseeing travels(漫游). Government post travels usually had a predetermined schedule and route therefore the travelers did not have as much autonomy as those on sightseeing travels, but newly appointed government officials moving to their new post experienced changes in plans due to various reasons depending on the situations they faced. Sightseeing travels were travels that scholars chose to go on of their own accord. Therefore, the motivations for traveling, location, and duration were comparatively more free and diverse, and the main emphasis of such travels was on interaction with others that the travelers met while traveling.
These scholarly travels in Tang Dynasty novels have two nomadic characteristics as follows. One is scholars, through travels, reasoned the ‘crossing boundaries’ between the settling and nomadic life due to the conflicts arising from the gap between the reality and the ideal, apart from enjoying the simple excursion. The other is that they spread and developed an aesthetic association(雅會) through the spontaneous exchange and communication.
Consequently, the scholarly travels emulating nomadism is one aspect of the distinctive culture unique to the Tang period, as it was able to develop within the peculiar openness of the Tang period. Furthermore, the characteristic of nomadism that appears in the scholarly travels of the Tang period is an area the needs continued attention and research because it has values that are different than nomadism discussed in the contemporary society.
