White-collar crime has been an unduly forgotten area in criminology, especially here in Korean academia. Considering the theoretical potential of the concept and for the sake of theoretical development in criminology and sociology, this is a deplorable situation. This paper explores the theoretical significance of the concept of white-collar crime and evaluates the debates over the concept. Furthermore, it discusses the causes of white-collar crime from the perspective of anomie theory. Sutherland`s concept of white-collar crime was defined by the characteristics of offender as well as of offense. The offender-based approach of white-collar crime concept has been severly criticized by some criminologists who believed that this component makes the concept vague and unsuitable for empirical investigation. However, theoretical merits of the concept of white-collar crime comes from the offender-based characteristics. Given the conceptual uniqueness of white-collar crime, Merton`s anomie theory is a useful theoretical perspective from which sociological understanding of white-collar crime are enhanced greatly. This paper explores the validity of Merton`s anomie theory as an theory for white-collar crime. In so doing, anomie theory is related with Sutherland`s explanation about the cause of white-collar crime. This paper discusses the relationship between anomie theory and differential association theory using the concept of delinquent subculture. Relying on the anomie theory and the concept of opportunity structure, this paper suggests a theoretical model for white-collar crime.
