This essay is going to discuss the relationship between John Wesley and the Pentecostal theology of the Holy Spirit. In doing this, it seeks to find a synthesis after dealing with the negative as well as positive interpretation. In the negative, critical perspective, there are some reservations regarding the relationship between Wesley’s theology of the Spirit and its Pentecostal, charismatic interpretation. For Wesley’s main concern was to emphasize the fruits of the Spirit rather than the outward expressions.
But Wesley regarded his revival movement as the restitution of the purest age of the primitive church in its apostolic form. So he longed to restore that kind of faith/practice of the early church in his theology and spirituality. In the positive viewpoint, Wesley’s theology of the Holy Spirit has been interpreted in accordance with the Pentecostal dimensions which were strongly advocated by John Fletcher, who was to become the official successor of the Methodist movement. In Fletcher’s theology and also in Wesley’s later sermon corpus, we can trace the theme of the Pentecost most clearly. Besides, Wesley’s idea of Christian perfection and the entire sanctification was viewed from this advantageous point.
In synthesis, I followed the important direction made by Albert C. Outler in his mature view of Wesley’s pneumatology from the Eastern patristic background. Especially, Macarius’s doctrine of the Holy Spirit in its charismatic orientation is very much in line with this comprehensive interpretation. In fact, the interpretation of Ted Runyon to see the wider context of Wesley’s later vision of the new creation fits with the eschatological motifs of pneumatological, pentecostal readings. It can posit the soteriological center of Wesley’s theology with a view to incorporating the early Eastern Fathers’ wholistic vision of re-creation and teleology. The concept of theosis deification) distinctive to eastern theology should be related to the pneumatological stresses restored in Wesley’s mature theology.
When we consider the present upsurge of the charismatic, pentecostal Christianity around the world, it is very timely to probe into the contribution made by John Wesley to the discussions of the Holy Spirit in a fresh way. Without the living experience and powerful transformation of the Spiritual life, Christianity can become a merely formalistic, rationalistic, and legalistic deformation. And in our Korean context, we long for the real reformation and renewal of the church. So the interest in the person and work of the Holy Spirit has to be without question in the theological studies as well as in the existential life of the church. But I believe that the fruits of the Spirit and resulting true transformation of persons and lives are to be considered properly in our discussion of the Holy Spirit.
