The purpose of this study is to explore the changes of Baek Heena’s fantasy picturebooks. Baek Heena is one of the representative Korean picturebook authors. Above all, her picturebooks are highly evalutated in terms of the fantastic imagination acquired in the everyday life’s events.
This study explored four works classified as fantasy such as Gu ReumPang [The Cloud Bread], Dalshavet [Moon Sherbet], Jangsu-Tang Sunyenim [The Angel of Jangsu-Tang] and Isanghan Umma [Strange Mom]. First, this study investigate the characterics of subject to perform the fantasy and the nature of fantasy world. The fantasy subjects and fantasy world in Gu ReumPang, Dalshavet are similar with those of the folklore. On the other hand, the fantasy world in Jangsu-Tang Sunyenim is impied secondary world and the fantasy world in Isanghan Umma is secondary world. And the fantasy subjects of Jangsu-Tang Sunyenim, Isanghan Umma are mainly the person who came from the secondary world. Second, this study investigate the desires realized in the narratives. The desires in Gu ReumPang, Dalshavet are altruistic ones. And the desires in Jangsu-Tang Sunyenim are the subjects’ inner desire, which have the more complex and interactive aspects. In the contrary, the desires in Isanghan Umma is the care in the level of basic needs rather than the desire.
