The aim of the present study was to test the mediating effects of internalized shame and depression in the relationship between self-criticism and suicidal ideation. This study focused, in particular, on the role of internalized shame in the relationship among self-criticism, depression, and suicidal ideation. For this, a questionnaire was distributed to 343 university students and 329 data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results were as follows: First, as the results of analyzing the pathway that self-criticism has impact on suicidal ideation via internalized shame, the model which assumes full mediation was adopted and internalized shame significantly mediated the relationship between self-criticism. Second, the effect of depression on suicidal ideation was not significant when controlling for the direct effect of internalized shame on suicidal ideation while internalized shame significantly mediated the relationship between self-criticism and suicidal ideation. Limitations, implication, and future directions of this study were discussed.
