This paper examines Lee Jonggeon’s military nobility genealogy and lands in Chungju area. Lee Jonggeon was the 12th descendent from the 15th son Murimgun Seonsaeng of Jeongjong, the 2th king of the Joseon Dynasty. His genealogy belonged to a representative military nobility genealogy as the Murimgun party of‘Lee" from Jeonju among the traditional military nobility family.
Lee Jonggeon, a military nobility, successively filled main posts, and especially debuted after becoming the Jangsin. His posts were generally involved with protest and security, and then guard and care for the king Gojong, during the Korean Empire Period. He had been grown in the family distinguished for military nobility and advanced to public posts at an early age and kept his posts for a long time. Such a long public service significantly contributed to his property accumulation
Most of his properties were lands. It is Chungju areas in which His ownership of them, a economic basis can be specifically verified. According to Gwangmuyangan, He owned 42 Gyeol 49 Bu 5 Sok of lands in Chungju. The scale of his lands ranked 10th among top landowners. His lands extended across five Myeon(面), all of which now belong to Eumseong-gun. He owned rice paddies more than (about four times) fields, and most of his lands were highly fertile, probably because of his power from high office. His lands were borrowed by 133 tenants. An analysis of their all arable lands shows that the ratio of tenants who cultivated more than one Gyeol was 34.6%, which amounted to 56.4% on the basis of 50 Bu. For the stability of productions, the tenants who had land ownership and arable lands were usually favored, and such a tendency is also found for Lee Jonggeon.
The lands owned by Him were intensively located at places with high productivities: plains and grain belts. They were concentrated in Maengdongmyeon, which might be favored by Lee Jonggeon: they could be easily managed because they were aggregated in one place. Almost all large landowners in Chungju, like Lee Jonggeon intensively concentrated their lands at one or two areas, which may be thought as the method in which contemporary absent landowners accumulated and managed their lands at places away from home.
At that time, Lee Jonggeon who had long served for politically central world owned lands throughout the country. Although the lands in Chungju areas were only some parts of all distributed across it, they show his specific land-ownership.
