The dichotomy of reflective writing and critical writing is dominant in the preceding researches on self-reflective writing. In this essay, I denominate the writing about oneself ‘self-reflective writing,’ by applying the critical thinking and reflection. Critical thinking and the reflection are synonymous and encompass the formal logic, the informal logic, the intuition, the imagination, and the emotion. Because the critical thinking is the both pure skill and the disposition, self-reflective writing is not only involved with the logic, but also the emotional and the moral sensibility, and a commitment to other and society. So the individual in the self-reflective writing is not private.
In the first chapter, I clarify the confusion regarding the concept and the methodology in the preceding researches on self-reflective writing. In the second chapter, I critically analyze the chapter of self-reflective writing in the university textbooks of ’Writing’. In the third chapter, I propose my own theory of self-reflective writing. In the fourth chapter, I suggest a case study for the prize inner work in the travel essay, ’Ewha Ecri, 2016’. In the final chapter, I appreciate the self-reflective writing as an educational value and extend its self to the other and society.
