This article is my preliminary result of the collating study of Shinsenjikyo (the edition of Tenji times) by now. In the process of collating, all the faults in every aspect of the whole book, such as the head words, the Fanqie method, the paraphrases in quotations, the prompt massage in variant chinese character patterns, etc, will be included and actually reflected in this article. Besides, a set of collating principles will be ascertained and all the faults will corrected here. For that purpose, we take the faults in chinese character patterns as focus, which mostly appeared in head words, Fanqie methods of up and down words, paraphrases, and the prompt massage in variant chinese character patterns. at the same time, the errors appeared in the proscess of paraphrases are collated, for example, listing the original meaning, the extending meaning, the borrowed meaning of chinese character’s irregularly. Even the homographic characters’pronunciations is listed in the paraphrases, which brings confusion. All those errors that are caused by irrigorous style of Shinsenjikyo will be collated here. Besides, the questions such as unlisted citation sources, mistaken citations, wrong sentences and phrases, omitting the Chinese characters without replicators, etc, are collated, too.
Shinsenjikyo is a hand written edition and have lots of popular forms of chinese characters just like other Chinese documents from China at that time. Athough it has dictionaries for reference and differentiate and takes the standard characters as the main head words to reduce the wrong character forms, the chaos in character form still exists. And, This book still includes distinctive popular forms of chinese characters, for example, characters’ variation, characters’ error and chaos, homopraphic characters. Thus, great many popular forms of chinese characters and knotty chinese characters and homographic characters appears in all parts of the main body of the book, which enable us not to get accurate knowledge of the book. Even so, Shinsenjikyo still have very high academic value, which make me collate it carefully, demonstrate its real academic value and put it back in the historical status of Chinese characters.
