Women are generally considered for support roles and offered administrative, financial and non-technical positions with lower pay than the male employee in businesses. Due to stereotyping and for safety issues, women have limited employment opportunities and if employed, usually gives up their promotion and capacity development plans. Women in business are also suffering double burden of works while suffering more challenges than businessmen. However, the consequences of such portrayal or essentialist representations prove very adverse for women’s capacity. Rather than fully acknowledging women’s participation and contribution in the country’s economy, their skills, capacity and remuneration are limited and muffled. As a result, most of them are neither counted nor given any role in critical decision-making level in organizations. A common framework is necessary to enable employers to mainstream gender equality in their businesses. UN Global compact principles for sustainable business are a framework based on the areas of (i) basic human rights, (ii) labor, (iii) environment and (iv) anti-corruption. In this paper, I am trying to present why UNGC is the possible option to help women in workforce by exploring various kinds of women’s challenges in workforce (both women in business and employees). I have studied 2000 business profiles in Myanmar from 2014 to 2015 and made face-to-face interviews to some of UNGC members. Social, cultural norms, stereotyping and gender neutral practices are major issues which influence the decision of female candidates to leadership positions.
