This paper strives to throw light on what the Centre for Women’s Studies in Lady Doak College has been undertaking to promote equality. More specifically, what the centre has been doing to contribute to lessening the number of crimes against Indian women. India has been developing in leaps and bounds across various fields in the last few decades. Be it technology or economy, there has been immense growth. We have even succeeded in sending a rocket to Mars. However, there is one area that has shown only a little improvement: the status of women. In recent times, crimes against women have been on the rise. For example rape, torture for dowries and domestic violence is still rampant. Additionally, news about moral policing and victim shaming still fill newspapers every single day. At the heart of all these evils lies inequality. Patriarchy is so deeply seated within the Indian mentality that it cannot be easily removed. Furthermore, no amount of pepper spray cans will prevent rapes from occurring. Defensive mechanisms can only keep the crimes at bay. They are no one solution for this problem. To put an end to all this violence, we need to attack the enemy at its heart. Only education can clear the confusion inside an Indian’s head. The Centre for Women’s studies has been spreading awareness on the importance of gender equality to hundreds of young women each year. The ability of one woman is not to be underestimated. Each woman becomes a wife one day and a mother another day. If she could successfully teach her son someday that women ought to be respected, then our objective is fulfilled. If every man could look at a woman as his equal, crimes would decrease and India would be a much better place to live.
