The purpose of this study is to investigate user evaluation and needs on the lobby’s color environment in accordance in changes in space and functions of the lobby of general hospitals. For this purpose: (1) The frame of this study is formed by summarizing the concept and functional elements of the lobby of hospitals based on literature review and earlier studies; (2) The status of lobby plans was examined in the field by selecting the subject for the examination; (3) A survey was conducted on the user evaluation on the colors of the lobby and the needs for color image. The results showed that: (1) The functional elements of the lobby were divided by considering the characteristics of the lobby with an open structure into the function of information, the function of supporting medical care, the function of rest, and the function of convenience and service; (2) In view of lobby usage characteristics, it is identified that the lobby is not only for movement and support for medical care but also for use and staying and that it is necessary to consider provision of rest and convenience; (3) The importance of and satisfaction with the lobby as a space for the functions of information, support for medical care, and rest were found to be high. In case of commercial spaces and cultural spaces with the functions of convenience and service, it is identified that it is needed to change the recognition and to induce space use of such spaces as a new functional space through public relations and a variety of activities; and (4) In view of recognition on and needs for color image, higher needs were found for a warmer, lighter, more active, softer, and more natural image than the generally recognized colors.
