The sea route which is called Yellow Sea South Road(YSSR) since having been developed by the merchants of Silla dynasty, was one of the major routes between China and Korean Peninsula. In the former part of Koryo period YSSR was famous for a tributary route with Song dynasty detouring the northern Yao. But in the latter period of Koryo, YSSR had lost its role as tributary route. While in the last period of Koryo YSSR was reopened against the similar historical circumstances to the former period of Koryo, which was not enough noticed by most students though. About 50 more cases of dispatching the envoys through YSSR in the last period of Koryo were almost not mentioned even in the largest geographical encyclopedia produced by the greatest scholar like Kim Jeong-ho. This is because YSSR did not have so much significance at that time. Not only Ming Empire had enforced the policy of ocean prohibition for the political purpose, Koryo dynasty also had not been active in using the YSSR as is shown by the memorials of changing the road. The dispatch of envoy in 1390 was the last through YSSR. In Chosun period there was no dispatching of the envoys through YSSR and the transfer of capital to Beijing in 1421 is considered to be the critical incident for the dissolution of YSSR.
It maybe said that the history of the 500 years Koryo’s had experienced a big change in the sense of the dissolution of the YSSR. The dissolution of the YSSR has made Korean peninsula lost its original vitality as Oceanic power originating from its geopolitical location of the topos of the most east of Eurasia Continent.
It is to be noteworthy that the dissolution of YSSR has served as a momentum for Chosun dynasty of the loss of Yellow Sea and retrogressing the historical current of The Age of Maritime Expansion, thus retreating to the closed border area of Far East. The birth of the inland directional Gunsan at the time of King Sejong is considered to be a good example reflecting the story of the dissolution of YSSR.
