The current study partially replicated Ha (2016) with the purpose to investigate the effect of integration of formal instruction (FI) and textual enhancement (TE). Unlike Ha (2016), in which FI was limited to the order of the English determiner system and semantic types of English articles, the current study employed more comprehensive teaching of English articles and included Type 5 articles―conventional use. 79 university students received three-week FIs on English articles, followed by a TE session in which one group read TE material while the other group read non-TE one. The findings suggested that all the participants showed improvement in the use of all the three articles while there were no significant differences in overuse of articles between the pre- and post-tests. Additionally, those who experienced both the formal instruction (FI) and TE sessions showed more overuse of Ø as well as more improvement in the use of Ø. Lastly, they showed remarkable improvement in the use of Type 5 articles. Two pedagogical implications are suggested based on the findings of this study.
