This paper explores the effect of the thought reform in the Shanghai newspaper circle in 1952 on establishing the socialist media system in China. Building upon Fegn Xiaocai’s work on thought reform of the capitalists as political ritual for the regime legitimacy, this study analyzes how thought reform in the shanghai newspaper circle as political ritual contributed to regime legitimacy. Earlier works on thought reform during the Cold War focused on the effect of thought reform on the actual transformation of minds by adopting the concept of “brainwashing,”and these works were refuted by the later works persuasively demonstrating the limits of thought reform in transforming the minds of the people. By analyzing thought reform as political ritual, this study pays more attention to the effect of thought reform in regime consolidation rather than actual transformation of minds. During the thought reform, non-party media workers were required to publicly demarcate the boundary between capitalists’ media thoughts and workers’ media thoughts. In other words, they had to publicly denounce their own past and articulate the acceptance of the new “correct” thoughts in the self-examination. This process led to the non-party workers’ public approval of the legitimacy of the CCP’s workers’ media thought, and had the effect of weakening of the non-party media workers’ authority and enhancing of the authority of the party cadres in the non-party newspapers.
