The purpose of this study is to investigate the preferred colors in indoor environment in private and public communal space providing fundamental resources for identifying the recent trend of preferred colors in indoor environment. As for the methods in research, conducting the first survey on expert groups for acquiring the objectivity of survey and validity of research and second survey on preferred colors for communal space on the general public based on the first investigation implemented on expert groups. The results of this study was as follows; First, of all, 83.3% of responders have highly evaluated the importance of color in communal space, and 93.8% of them have assessed that the proportion of consumers who were to select colors in person was expected to increase in the future. Therefore, they turned out to recognize colors as what significantly influenced on the image of indoor residential environment. Second, GY and Y type-colors with high brightness and low chroma turned out to be highly preferred in communal space. Therefore, it was known that consumers have recently preferred bright, calm, and natural colors for indoor communal space. Third, the proportion of white and blue turned out to be high as individually preferred colors. However, the proportion of YR, Y, and GY turned out to be high in preferred colors in communal space. This implies that colors making people remind of "natural," "soft," "bright," and convenient" image as favored colors in the communal space are preferred instead of reflecting individually preferred colors as communal space is where anyone is welcome to use with others at the same time. Seeing as how this study has suggested a trend of currently preferred colors in indoor space, it is anticipated to provide implications on similar researches in the future.
