This paper attempts to explore views on evolutionism of some protestant denominations or groups in modern Korea. The four denominations or groups chosen for analysis are Presbyterianism, Methodism, non-church movement, and Seventh-Day Adventist Church (SDA).
First, presbyterian missionaries and theologians usually oppose to evolutionism. According to them, evolutionism is a kind of speculative philosophy or a kind of false science without solid scientific evidences, while the Biblical account of Special Creation is scientifically true. They insist that the Bible is not compatible with evolutionism. Second, Methodists generally argue that evolutionism is compatible with Christianity. They combined evolution with creation into the idea of theistic evolutionism. According to theistic evolutionism, evolution was set in motion by God, or God creates through evolution. Therefore Methodists reject evolutionist materialism or materialistic evolutionism. Third, non-church movements (無敎會主義) have a tendency to accept evolutionism. While Gyo-sin Gim (金敎臣), one of the pioneers of the non-church movement in Korea, claimed that the contents of the Bible could be supported by the scientific discoveries made by modern geological researches, Seok-heon Ham (咸錫憲), another leading figure of the movement, stressed the value of evolutionism in understanding the providence of God. Finally, SDA is the most strongly against evolutionism. SDA emphasizes that evolutionism is not only an error but also evil.
In conclusion, while Biblical literalism and fundamentalist theology of presbyterianism and SDA take negative stances on evolutionism, Biblical criticism and theological liberalism in Methodism and non-church movements led to positive approaches to evolutionism.
