Poetry party is the culture mainly developed by the imperial family and aristocrats during the Period of North and South Dynasties, and this continued during the early Tang Dynasty. The poetry parties during the early Tang Dynasty were mainly held by the imperial family or high ranking aristocrats, and the participating literary people competed keenly to demonstrating their ability to create poems in order to prove their literary talent. The activities of literary people centering on Bai-Juyi including Yuan-Zhen and Liu-Yuxi and at the poetry party had important impact on the expansion of the poetry party as a culture into the literary society in the mid Tang Dynasty and afterwards. Especially, a number of literary people including Bai-Juyi, Liu-Yuxi, Pei-Du, and Niu-sengru lived in Luoyang in the reign of Emperor Wenzong and the poetry party was popular in the region, and their activities at the party had great impact on the poetry party culture afterwards. This study studied the creative trends among literary people and their significance in the history of the poetry party centering on the poetry parties in Luoyang region during the reign of Emperor Wenzong.
Luoyang in the East had enjoyed the same status as Chang`an in the early Tang Dynasty. After the An-Shi Rebellion, however, it lost its influence as the political center and rather became the favorite destination for retiring officials and the region that many bureaucrats wish to be stationed at in order to avoid political battle. These bureaucrats wished to be part of the government while wanting to lead a hermit’s life by working in Luoyang. They also constructed large mansions competitively in order to enjoy scenery, leisure, and party in the villa that embraces nature eventually to reach the level of unworldiness. A number of poetry parties were held in those mansions, and this spatiotemporal environment gave consistent impact on literary creativity of the poetry party at the time.
Elder literary people in the Luoyang region during the reign of Emperor Wenzong such as Bai-Juyi, Liu-Yuxi, Pei-Du, and Niu-sengru had much strongly intended to spend their old age leisurely with nature and unworldly sentiment rather than pursuing fame and fortune. These literary people expressed their inner sentiments, regret for life, doubts about official post or the salvation of the world, and the exchange and affinity with friends while exchanging their works at the poetry party. They also created new literary formats such as changhe poem, heyun poem, Lianju, and Ci. These creative trends spread quickly through the literary society through the Collection of changhe poems compiled by Bai-Juyi and Liu-Yuxi. Eventually, the literary poetry party in Luoyang in the mid Tang Dynasty is considered to have had significant impact on the development of the poetry party within courts into that of literary society and on the development of changhe poem or heyun poem into major formats of the poetry society.
