In Seoul Korean, lax and aspirated stops are undergoing a sound change (i.e., a tonogenetic process), characterized by the merger of a consonantal opposition and the development of tonal differences. This study further examines Busan and Suncheon dialects of Korean to see whether they undergo the sound change or not. Results showed that, there was dialectal variability on sound change: three different locations with three different patterns. Unlike Seoul Korean, Busan and Suncheon Korean maintain a traditional pattern of consonants (no merger or tense-lax merger). The lax and aspirated stops in Busan cause smaller f0 perturbations in the following vowel than might be expected for a language undergoing tonogenesis. In contrast, tonal differences are being developed by Suncheon Korean speakers. The results of dialectal variability on sound change confirm that Korean is clearly participating in a tonogenetic process. Further study is necessary on how the dialectal variability on sound change in Korean can be accounted for.
