The purpose of this study was to analyze whether self-compassion plays a moderating role in the relationship between shame and burnout experienced by female athletes. In other words, we tried to verify the hypothesis that burnout phenomenon is higher with stronger shame of female athletes but burnout is lower with higher self-compassion. The subjects of the survey were 215 women athletes who were registered in K, J City Physical Education High School, Golf High School, National Sports Council and National Sports Associations (as of December, 2015). The main results are as follows. First, although the shame of a female athlete influences burnout, self-kindness showed no effect on the moderation in the relationship between burnout and shame. Second, the common humanity of a female athlete did not show a pure moderating effect. Third, burnout increased as the shame of female athletes increased, but mindfulness factor of self-compassion played a major role in moderating effects. In conclusion, it is necessary to increase the level of self-compassion based on mindfulness in order to lessen the shame of female athletes or to reduce burnout caused by lethargy and withdrawal from sport.
