This research introduces variable discharging/charging experiments and their electrochemical characteristics analysis of a prismatic LiNiMnCoO2 (NMC) cell with a large rated capacity. This cell can be clearly considered as the representative cell for electric-powered application such as electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage system (ESS) with purposes of an operating power source and grid-connection with renewable sources, respectively. Some differences in electrochemical characteristics between prismatic cells and cylindrical 18650/26650 cells that has a small rated capacity are discussed in this research. According to three discharging current rate (C-rate) conditions, some internal parameters such as discharge capacity, open-circuit voltage (OCV), nominal voltage, internal resistance and surface temperatures at 25°C are measured and compared. From these extensive experiments, it is possible to get useful information in order to establish the battery management system (BMS) for efficient discharging/charging of electric-powered application. For reference, in order to accomplish the purpose of this research, a 94Ah prismatic NMC cell was used.
