Joining in the world market early, seafood is one of Vietnam"s key export items with the major markets such as the US, Japan, EU and China. In the context of globalization, as trade is freer among the nations and regions around the world, the developed economies have been continuing to take measures in trade protection to block import streams as well as protect local businesses. Japan is not out of this trend. At this time, Japan has been Vietnam"s second largest import market, with stable high turnover value. Vietnamese enterprises are currently exporting a wide range of products to Japan, of which shrimp, squid and tuna are now three main commodities, accounting for 80% of the total value of aquatic exports. So when this market carries out the new trade barriers in seafood import such as compulsory law, food hygiene law, Japanese Agricultural Standard, regulations on labeling products, product liability law, it will make Vietnamese enterprises to face many challenges in increasing their growth rate in their second largest seafood import market. Through the systematization of the theory of trade barriers, as well as the assessment of current seafood export status of Vietnamese enterprises to the Japanese market, the paper proposes some strategic orientations which are suitable for dealing with trade barriers and achieving greater efficiency in international performance in this market.
