This article tries to elucidate the meaning of the Zapatistas` movement with a gender perspective, focused on the indigenous autonomy. Indigenous women in Chiapas have built their strengths in the historical process of indigenous movements, feminist movements. Nevertheless, indigenous women didn`t have an independent national organization until the outbreak of Zapatista rebellion. After indigenous women became Zapatistas, they struggled to engender indigenous autonomy which is one of the Zapatista`s ideas. Zapatistas made the Women`s Revolutionary Law in 1993 and formed CONAMI in 1997, the first national organization of indigenous women. The most important meaning of Zapatistas` movement from the perspective of indigenous women was to realize an equality between men and women in the their communities and EZLN. Gender`s roles changed in communities and Zapatistas women held the leadership in EZLN. In other words, indigenous women experienced the other world through Zapatista movement.
