Despite the ample research on the Chilean author, Roberto Bolaño, little has been done to trace his literary influences, most importantly in the specific ways he represented Mexico in his work. This study asserts that the Chilean author coincides surprisingly with D.H. Lawrence in the literary representation of Mexico. To illustrate such assertion, first a brief biographical introduction is presented to understand the deep and complex relationship both authors had with Mexico as a place of exile, desire and expectation. Secondly, a comparative analysis based on Bajtin’s concept of chronotope, and Edward Said’s criticism of orientalism, myth and the ideological representation of the non-European cultures examines the depiction of the Mexican landscape, and the Indian and Mestizo characters in Lawrence’s Mornings in Mexico and The Plumed Serpent, and in Bolaño’s The Savage Detectives and 2666.
