Lao economic growth has not been inclusive, mainly because it does not create the jobs for rural women. Major causes of poverty identified in this survey ranging from unemployment to lack of social services, infrastructure, limited access to education, health facilities, and productive inputs and markets. The lack of access to wage income is the main driver of poverty and together with growing income differentials within and between ethnic groups has driven up gender inequality. The research is to improve the knowledge and understanding of the gender dimensions of poverty in employment sector in rural villages in Lao PDR. A range of semi-structured tools was used to produce qualitative research findings. These instruments enabled the research team to investigate key topics that are not as amenable to statistical analysis, such as gender norms, gender roles, current and potential pathways out of poverty, household, individual aspirations, barriers to moving out of poverty, and solutions to overcome those barriers.
