In the past, young men were fully encouraged to access higher education, while young women were not because of many reasons, such as schools were far away and parents were afraid of their security. Moreover, some families were concerned that if their daughters were educated, they would write a love letter to men and use their education for negative reasons. Finally, other reasons included the civil war in the Khmer Rouge regime, housework responsibility, and of course, poverty. Because of these reasons, my grandmother and mother were illiterate. Cambodian women constituted 51% of the total population, yet many of them did not have access to education as they are living with violence. Based on the Gender Analysis conducted by the Asian Development Bank (2012), 11.9% of girls are not encouraged to have access to education because of poverty, social norm, and power dominance of men. Moreover, 7.2 % of girls have been dropped out of pre-school and 20.3 % from the lower secondary school and 25.4% have been dropped out of upper second level in 2013/2014 (Education Statistic &Indicator 2014-2015). However, a group of young women from different backgrounds testified in the feminist talk that was organised by the Young Women Leadership Network (YWLN) that they have been supported by family in accessing education; they are the lucky young women. Yet they still have been limited to select the subject in the university. An LGBT activist also informed that she was punished when she did not wear the female uniform to school. Indigenous young women also have been enabled to marry at a young age; only 10 young women hold bachelor degrees.
