In 2017, the 500th year of the Reformation, Korean Protestant Churches are in serious crisis due to shrinking membership. According to reports of General Assemblies, people are leaving the organized-established churches to join smaller, more emotionally awakened and more spiritually connected worship groups. In fact, most Christians in Korea would like to find their own joyful ways of worshipping. In other words, they are very interested in powerful worship which is filled with ‘the living voice of the Gospel’ and also with ‘God’s Grace Mercy and Comfort’.
It seems to me that the above mentioned ‘viva vox evangelii’ and also God’s mercy and comfort are two things that help to overcome the serious situation that Korean protestant Churches face and to guide them into a renewal of worship. If so, where can we find these two elements of Worship? Martin Luther’s ‘Deutsche Messe 1526’, offers a positive practice of psalm reading and singing. He also offers us an example of the practice of ‘confession of sin’ and ‘Absolution’ in his ‘German Mass 1526’. Other elements of ‘Deutsche Messe’ will be dealt with the next paper, “A Study on Luther’s Preaching”.
