This study aims to examine the actual situation of geography education in Korean primary schools during the beginning of the Japanese occupation when a geography course did not exist in primary schools.
At the beginning of the Japanese occupation, the Japanese Government-General of Korea did not include geography in primary schools; it was included only after the primary education system was revised. However, after carefully monitoring and examining the contents of the “Elementary Geography Supplementary Textbook” and the “Teaching Guidebook on Geography” compiled in 1920, basic knowledge provided to Japanese students and knowledge about the excellence of imperial Japan were taught through the “Elementary Japanese Textbook” in the Japanese course, even though a geography course did not exist.
In other words, geography education at the beginning of the Japanese occupation included contents that influenced Koreans in an indirect manner. Moreover, by combining it with the core curriculum of the Japanese course, geography education was smoothly implemented without being included as a separate subject in order to justify the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty.
