The purpose of this study is to analyze the vocabulary in Daewol Xixiang ji which is a translation version published 1913 by classifying
the words into the new vocabulary and unknown idiomatic expressions. The conclusion is summarizing the discussion.
First, some distinctive features of the vocabulary in Daewol Xixiang ji are; there are some words which maintain old form, and many rare words and dialects. Of course there are some rare Sino Korean because this book is a translation version. So in the point of view history of words, the vocabulrary in this book indicates the aspect of a period of transition from Early Modern Korean to Modern Korean.
Second, there are some vocabularies which have to register on dictionary newly; ‘geodeot-’, ‘gyeoreu-’, ‘gyeopdidi-’, ‘gyeotju-’, ‘gyeotjit-’, ‘gwangchi-’, ‘nunmulnun’, ‘nunheogi’, ‘donggureogi’, ‘dwigil’, ‘ddudak’, ‘manggieoji-’, ‘meokgalgi’, ‘motgeo-’, ‘mudeungchi-’, ‘banghawrop-’, ‘byeollohi’, ‘byeorangyeol’, ‘sajujangi’, ‘sosovh-’, ‘sokmallo’, ‘soebyeoro’, ‘sipunsipun’, ‘eorideodeum-’, ‘eoritgi-’, ‘eojjeon’, ‘eolleongi’, ‘udeongteori’, ‘wonsugeot’, ‘ilhi-’, ‘jeomunbom’, ‘jeogeoya’, ‘jijeotjijeot’, ‘jjikbbudeudeukha-’, ‘hangajiro’ etc. But the meaning of ‘hotbegae’ is obscure.
Third, there are some vocabularies which have to register as polysemy; ‘ajik’, ‘gakdanji-’, ‘beondeugi-’, ‘injeong’, ‘hanbatang’, ‘hurihuriha-’ etc. and have to register as synonym; ‘ginha-’, ‘doe-’, ‘meokmeokha-’, ‘beondeugi-’, ‘ipsal’ etc.
Fourth, there are some unknown idiomatic expressions; ‘geulja saegi-’, ‘dwigil dak-’, ‘mareul dae-/jab-’, ‘bameul dob-’, ‘byeoseullo nol-’, ‘seoganeul dak-’, ‘ggeoksoe chii-’, ‘oseul gochi-’, ‘irodo mal-’, ‘janmal/eulleong buri-’, ‘tat eobs-’ etc.
Fifth, there are some vocabularies and grammatical morphemes which are defined as Munwhaoe in dictionary as like ‘geodeuchi-’, ‘geotmut-’, ‘-seumne’, ‘-seumna’. An analysis of this phenomenon will have to be fulfilled.
Furthermore, it is necessary to analyze the many versions of Xixiang ji for finding new words and tracing the form and meaning. It is to make foundation for description of the vocabulary system of Early Modern Korean and Modern Korean.
