This study aimed to examine the neural mechanisms of exercise addiction using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Thirteen participants (Mean age = 23.5 SD = 2.7), diagnosed as exercise addicts, were recruited based on the Korean Exercise Addiction Scale (KEAS), and participated in the experiment. Participants were presented with clips (stimuli) via a screen installed inside an MRI chamber. The clips included either exercise-related images or neutral images. Results showed that when exposed to exercise-related stimuli, exercise addicts showed increased activation in brain areas, such as the anterior cingulate cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex. This suggests that exercise addiction shares a similar mechanism with other types of addiction, as activation of these brain regions is known to be associated with drug addiction, reflecting craving or anticipation of future drug use. However, this does not imply that exercise addiction has the same physical or psychological problems as drug abuse. This study found similarities in the neural mechanisms of exercise addiction and those of other types of addiction.
