김백봉은 50여년의 전통을 통해 자신만의 독특한 예술세계를 구축해냈으며, 오늘날 한국무용사에 중요한 위치를 갖춘 대표적인 무용가로써 알려져 있다. 그가 한국 무용사에 남긴 업적은 크게 세 가지로 나누어 논할 수 있는데. 첫째는 신무용 운동과 활동이 현대적인 무용예술의 발전이란 측면에만 머무르지 않고 `한국무용`이라는 하나의 독립된 예술영역으로 움터 나올 수 있도록 하는데 기여했다는 점이다. 둘째로 한국무용학의 연구 및 교육 분야에 끼진 영향을 들 수 있다. 셋째는 왕성한 창작활동과 무용의 대중화에 기여했다는 점이다. 무용가 김백봉의 삶과 예술은 마치 하나의 잘 연출된 작품처럼 파란만장한 역사의 소용돌이 속에 수많은 역경이 함께 하였다. 그는 이 시대를 살아온 한 인간이 겪을 수 있는 갖가지 시련을 겪었지만 그러한 시련들은 마치 그의 예술가의 삶을 완성하기 위한 조건인 듯, 그의 삶과 예술은 하나의 행복한 사슬로 엮어져 있다. 즉 이러한 역경은 단순히 역경으로 끝나지 않았고 언제나 그의 작품세계에 끊이지 않는 분화구처럼 재해석 되어 잉태되어졌다.
Regardless of the level of interests, the study on the New-Dance Era`s dance artists and on their art worlds, which appeared after the liberalization of Korea, who caused the most influence to the Korean Dancing, was not done in various ways nor in depth. The Korean dance world may explanation this situation that they only had the time to run forward, and were not able to look back, or they could also explain that it was difficult to evaluate or analyse these artists because they are still alive. But maybe because of the limits which the active arts possesses, much misinterpretation and prejudices are spread widely. In the point of sending a generation away and greeting the 21st century, it is essential and needed desperately to research on this era`s dance artists and their art worlds. Originated from religious ceremonies, the dance, leaving many traces of diverse talents throughout our thousand years of history, was socially trampled under the perverted values, such as social discrimination and isolation, of the confucius Chosun Dynasty and the Japan`s colonial historic values. And during the early stage of the New Dance Era, where these views were still wide spread, the courage of the New Dance artists, who devoted their lives to dancing, has given strength to the 2nd generation of New Dance artists, who learned and inherited their forefathers, and this has led to never ending struggles and the efforts and actions of them has gave immense influence in making the dance as an independent stage art. But unfortunately, the influences and merits that these artists made to the history of Korean Dancing only remained on a conceptional and the amount of research done or is being done is still on a primitive stage. Therefore, researching the Kim Baek Bong`s art world, who was not only one of the most important person in the main stream of the early stage New Dance Era, but also was the best pupil and a brother-in-law with the legendary dancer, Choi Sung Hee, will have much meaning. Kim Baek Bong has constructed his own unique art world through 60 years of activities, and is known today as a representative dancer who holds an important position in the history of Korean Dancing. The contributions he made can be cli\,ided into three major sectors. The first is that he has contributed in letting the New Dance movement to develop into an independent field of art called the `Korean Dancing and not remain only in the stage of making minor contributions in the growth of modem dance art. This can be inferred by the fact that he has not only created the thesis on the basic movements of Korean Dancing, but also has researched and distributed the unique training methods and creation methods of the Korean Dancing. Second is the influence he has given to the studies and education of the Korean Dancing. The field of Dancing, which was isolated outside the educational structure. He has participated actively to include Dancing to high-schools and universities and has achieved this goal. Kim Back Bong has taught students in the university until he retired m the age of 65, and his passion for promoting dance education can still be observed today in his interview articles where he said that his largest desire is making Dancing as a necessary subject in the elementary, midclle, and high-school curriculum. Also, the <Bongsan Tal-Chun Mubo> and other researches on the documentational structures of Dancing is considered asa very important contribution in the field of Dancing today. Third is that he has contributed in the popularization of Dancing and has left many creations. This can be represented by Kim`s creations, the <Hwa Gwan Mu> and the <Bu Che Chum>. There are many people who recognizes the <Hwa Gwan Mu> and the <Bu Che Chum> as a folk dance ora traditional dance. As one can realize by this case, the dance composition abilities and creating abilities of Kim Back Bong were infinite and he has acted as a pioneer in the popularization of Korean Dancing. Like a well produced performance, the life and the art of the dancer Kim Baek Bong, went through so many ups and downs inside the swirls of history. He has experienced a kinds of trials which a man who lived through this era can experience, but these trials acted as if they were the required conditions to complete a life of an artist. His life and art is connected by a blissful chain. That is, these adversities did not end only as simple circumstances but always was reinterpreted in his art world like an endlessly erupting volcano.
