A part of the agreement between Colombia and the United States in the so called “Plan Colombia” has to do with combating narcotics production derived from the coca plant, particularly the cocaine. Most of the cocaine that reach the United States comes from South American countries, particularly Colombia where the fertile richness of its land is proper to proliferate tropical species such as coca and poppy which are used in medicine, but also serve as alkaloids that stimulate the nervous system of individuals.
As a bilateral strategy to eradicate coca plantations in the Colombian soil, the two countries, Colombia and United States, have agreed to conduct sprays of phosphonomethylglycine, commonly known as “glyphosate”, a powerful herbicide that removes not only the coca plants but also crops grains such as soybeans, sorghum, corn and many others. Additionally, glyphosate used in high concentrations, affects water sources in rural areas of the Colombian countryside and therefore to the economy plunging farmers who grow their products in extreme poverty and also with the highest risk of get skin diseases and even cancer.
This paper aims to show that glyphosate, even that is used with relatively safely in many countries of the world as a herbicide, is not the right way to combat illegal coca plantations in Colombia by the effects of overuse of herbicide generated in this particular tropical environment and its tremendous impact on the economy and welfare of the Colombian farmers who live in the regions where they carry out spraying. Therefore, the government of Colombia in coordination with the United States should seek a new strategy to combat coca plantations without having any impact on the environment and the local economy of the rural communities.
This research has been divided in four parts. The first one is the Introduction where the problem of spraying and its environmental impacts are presented, the second one explains about glyphosate and its uses in agriculture fields, the third one shows figures and presents two specific cases resulting of glyphosate spraying and the forth one presents the conclusions of the research work.
