The purpose of this study is to find out the changes and directions of the Korean music education focused on Gayageum teaching contents in elementary and middle school. For this purpose, the teaching contents related to Gayageum in the music curriculums and music textbooks for the elementary and middle school were examined and analyzed.
The results of the examination about Gayageum related contents from the 1st curriculum to 2015 revised curriculum. Most of the Gayageum education was conducted through appreciation activity and an instrumental activity was added in 2009 revised curriculum. The Gayageum education in the music textbook was mainly focused on the appreciation activity in elementary school. In middle school, understanding activity, appreciation activity, and instrumentary activity were also conducted.
The change in the Korean music education is as follows. First, it is recommended not only wind instrument but also strings such as Gayageum in teaching Korean melodic instruments. Second, the Korean music concepts such as Sigimsae are taught in various activities such as singing, playing musical instruments, and appreciation. Third, traditional teaching methods by using Gueum are applied. According to the results of the examination, the direction of Korean music education is as follows. First, the Korean music teaching methods based on traditional teaching methods should be developed and generalized in school education. Second, it should accommodate the learning of Korean music which can be applied to various activities and is effective. Third, musical instruments education that can be integrated with singing and making music activities such as Gayageum should be done. Fourth, Korean orchestral ensemble education should be provided not only percussion ensemble education.
Teachers should accurately recognize the changes and directions of Korean music education. When they teach based on the changes and directions, we can expect to improve the development and quality of the Korean music education.
