This study explored the verbal and non-verbal play interaction of controlling the mothers and the reactions of their child in a non-structured playroom. The participants of this study were 15 mothers and their 3 to 5 year-old children respectively. The mothers and the children regularly visited 00 child play and psychological center in 00 city during a certain period. To analyze the mothers’ play interaction, we videotaped the mother-child play interaction in a playroom after individual brief interview about the process of videotaping during their play. The controlling mothers’ play interaction was consists of teaching and leading the play, negative responding, permissive attitude, intrude children’s play, competitive play, and limited reaction. Their child’s reaction was consists of stop playing, playing their own way, aggressive reaction, cannot focus on play, and being agitate. The controlling mothers’ play interaction of over-involvement, over-expectation or inconsistent behavior, lacking of empathy that may affect children’s self-esteem, or disturb the development of autonomy. Also, the children reacted as they play with their controlling mothers such as hostility toward the mother, annoyance, aggressive behaviors which can be developed as externalizing behavior problems and negatively affect children’s social and emotional development. Therefore, this study has implications for positive parenting behaviors in terms of play interaction as well as daily life with children.
