This paper examines the epitaph of Yi Eunji(李隱之) in the collection of the Longmen Museum(龍門博物館) in Luoyang(洛陽), China. The tablet was made in 739 CE, including inscriptions about Yi Eunji and his wife, Lady of Hajian Liu clan(河間劉氏).
The inscriptions describe that when Sui(隋) and Tang(唐) China conquered Liaodong(遼東) how a Goguryeo clan in Liaodong responded and what they carried out after Goguryeo’s fall. Yi Eunji family had settled down in Liaodong long before falling of Goguryeo; when Sui attacked Goguryeo, the family helped China as Congshi (“ministrant”) of Xiangping county, and when Tang invaded Goguryeo, they helped China militarily. Even though the details how they helped China have not known, it is presumed that they conducted as translators.
Yi Hoe’s epitaph records as if Yi Eunji returned to Tang before the fall of Goguryeo, which is different from the historical fact. In truth, he returned to Tang after the fall of Goguryeo, but his descendants fabricated the event to take advantages.
Yi Eunji was born in Liaodong, Goguryeo in 655, and died in 705 CE. He returned to Tang when Goguryeo fell in 668. He served Tang Court as a translator to ruled Goguryeo people. After his death, he got the title Quanzhou(泉州) sima(司馬) for his merits being acknowledged. He lived and died in Luoyang and was buried in Mt. Mang(邙山). He had three sons including the first one, Yi Hoe(李懷), who all succeeded as military officials.
Epitaphs of Yi Eunji and Yi Hoe are essential materials in Korea-China relation history and history of Goguryeo people upon the Goguryeo’s fall.
