This study aimed to find intertextuality between Picking chrysanthemums Painting(採菊圖) and TaoYuanming(陶淵明) works of literature. The images of Picking chrysanthemums Painting contain plentiful contents as they fused with many literary works of TaoYuanming. First of all, the typical motifs of Picking chrysanthemums Painting as a poetry-based painting of Yinjiu(「飮酒」) the fifth are picking chrysanthemums(採菊), east fence(東籬) and south mountain(南山). Second, the pine tree expressed in Picking chrysanthemums Painting revealed the symbolic meaning through Yinjiu the forth and the eighth. The pine tree symbolizes a spirit of TaoYuanming that does not give up to pursue a life of his own mind to the end when he has lived in poverty. Third, some of Picking chrysanthemums Painting are combined with drinking story of TaoYuanming, and they are associated with Yinjiu the seventh and the fourteenth, Jiurixianju(「九日閒居」), Wuliuxianshengzhuan(「五柳先生傳」) and Yinjiu preface. Finally, to conclude, Picking chrysanthemums Painting, through intertextuality with the aforementioned literary texts, contain the elements of picking chrysanthemums, appreciation chrysanthemums, drinking story and amuse himself by writing. And in which there are various variations depending on the personality of the painters.
Consequently the significance of this study is to find the visual images of Picking chrysanthemums Painting have connoted the multi-layered meaning of reclusiveness of TaoYuanming, and to get a more comprehensive and multifaceted understanding of the various implications being contained in Picking chrysanthemums Painting. I hope this study will contribute to further research of variation on the subjects of painting of Picking chrysanthemums Painting.
