In terms of religious precepts, Korean Buddhism exhibits a distinct compound structure: ‘Seosangsugye’ and ‘Daeseungbosal faith.’ Jajang(慈藏), a notable monk from the kingdom of Silla, was the figure who completed this structure. The characteristics of the Buddhist precepts he established in Korea were inherited to Soonje(順濟) and Jinpyo(眞表), two of the monks active in the Unified Kingdom of Silla. In other words, the structure founded by Jajang has been inherited as a tradition of Korean Buddhism in Korea.
The trend of the Buddhist precepts (preceptive legacy) in Korea had been maintained until later Joseon, when it was terminated by the pressure from Confucianism. Daeun(大隱) was a Buddhist monk who attempted to restore the trend. Through Seosangsugye based on Brahmajāla-sutta, Daeun created and led a new trend of religious precepts, which followed the tradition of Korean Buddhism in the aspect of Seosangsugye, but somewhat differentiated from the original due to its origin from Brahmajāla-sutta. Jaun(慈雲) was the monk who solved this problem and reaffirmed Jajang’s original tradition of Seosangsugye.
Jaun revived the tradition of the Buddhist precepts established by Jajang and built the foundation of the Buddhist precepts of the Modern Jogye Order. Ilta(日陀) was the Buddhist monk who established the value of popular religious precepts by associating the values of religious precepts with prayer and subsequently expanding the denotations of religious precepts. This achievement is largely significant for the social responsibilities of Buddhism in modern society where ethics are increasingly more important.
